Local Discourse Structure of Chat Dialogues: Evidence from Keystroke Logging
نویسنده
چکیده
While the global discourse structure that describes how utterances are grouped into larger units of discourse has received much attention both in oral and in computermediated dialogues, the local structure (i. e. the structure of individual utterances) of chat conversations has not been previously studied in a psycholinguistic perspective. In this paper we explore some evidence of cognitive processing in spontaneous electronic language production in an experimental web chat. Keystroke logging is used to detect hesitation pauses in chat, which are then mapped onto the local discourse structure as marked up in the corpus of chat dialogues by four independent coders.

Discourse parsing for multi-party chat dialogues
In this paper we present the first ever, to the best of our knowledge, discourse parser for multi-party chat dialogues. Discourse in multi-party dialogues dramatically differs from monologues since threaded conversations are commonplace rendering prediction of the discourse structure compelling. Moreover, the fact that our data come from chats renders the use of syntactic and lexical informatio...
متن کاملKeyloggers in Cybersecurity Education
Keylogger programs attempt to retrieve confidential information by covertly capturing user input via keystroke monitoring and then relaying this information to others, often for malicious purposes. Keyloggers thus pose a major threat to business and personal activities such as Internet transactions, online banking, email, or chat. To deal with such threats, not only must users be made aware abo...
متن کاملInteger Linear Programming for Discourse Parsing
In this paper we present the first, to the best of our knowledge, discourse parser that is able to predict non-tree DAG structures. We use Integer Linear Programming (ILP) to encode both the objective function and the constraints as global decoding over local scores. Our underlying data come from multi-party chat dialogues, which require the prediction of DAGs. We use the dependency parsing par...
متن کاملSupporting Learner Reflection in the Language Translation Class
In a case study a University class undertook a translation from Swedish to English in a keystroke logging environment and then replayed their translations in pairs while discussing their thought processes when undertaking the translations, and why they made particular choices and changes to their translations. Computer keystroke logging coupled with peer-based intervention assisted the students...
متن کاملControl in task-oriented dialogues
In this paper, we explore the mechanisms by which conversants control the direction of a dialogue. We find further evidence that control in task-oriented dialogues is subordinate to discourse structure. The initiator of a discourse segment has control; the non-initiator can contribute to the purpose of the segment, but this does not result in that person taking over control. The proposal has im...
